Puritan Beliefs
The Puritans were known to to lead a simple life style. They broke away from the Church of England because of the influence of government and politics in the church. They felt that there was no hope to save the church so they separated. The Bible was the law for this religious community.
People who opposed the Puritan views were asked to leave the community
-Puritans believed that the Bible was God's true law, and provided a plan of living
-John Calvin established the Puritan religion
-They thought that only a certain number of people were chosen for salvation History of PuritanPuritan Values
1. Total Depravity - through Adam and Eve's fall, every person is born sinful - concept of Original Sin.
2. Unconditional Election - God "saves" those he wishes - only a few are selected for salvation - concept of predestination.
3. Irresistible Grace - God's grace is freely given, it cannot be earned or denied. Grace is defined as the saving and transfiguring power of God.
4. Perseverance of the "saints" - those elected by God have full power to interpret the will of God, and to live uprightly. If anyone rejects grace after feeling its power in his life, he will be going against the will of God - something impossible in Puritanism. Puritan Beliefs

- The punishments were brutal including:

3. Ears were sliced off
5. Whippings
